Using linear technology to transport safe deposit cassette boxes

Linear technology automates special processes that enable bank customers to access their safe deposit boxes 24/7 – securely, quickly and reliably. 

Linear technology is used whenever anything needs to move along an axis. This form of automation is particularly robust and reliable. The modular item Linear System produces custom solutions that make light work of even complex processes. For example, MS Protect AG uses linear technology from item for its automated safe deposit locker system. With the Valiomat system, valuables can be deposited and retrieved securely and flexibly around the clock. Two-factor authentication to gain access and for the actual deposit boxes ensures the banking sector’s high security standards are met. Depending on the application scenario, either a timing-belt drive or a rack drive is used to automate the special transport processes. Implementation is as straightforward as it is flexible.

How the Valiomat system keeps valuables safe and transports them securely

Using the item Linear System in the Valiomat system has set an important benchmark. “The system has been operating without any faults for years. We installed the first item linear unit in 2009 and have never needed to replace it,” reveals Simon Schefer, Managing Director of MS Protect. Some 100 systems have now been installed. The Valiomat design is like a special kind of high-bay storage system. Varying numbers of deposit boxes can be arranged both on top of and next to each other. The security of the valuables inside the boxes has top priority, which is why the high-bay storage system is encased in a vault.

Timing-belt drives are suitable for a Valiomat machine length of up to 12 metres. For longer transport distances, on the other hand, rack drives are used to efficiently automate the transport processes.

Customised automation of transport processes – with item linear technology

The solution is operated by an automated storage and retrieval system in the form of a track-guided storage and retrieval vehicle that transports a cassette containing the valuables from the high-bay storage system to an output station. There is where the Linear System from item comes in. The Valiomat system moves along two axes – horizontally and vertically. Up to a system length of 12 metres, the item Linear Unit KLE 6 60×60 LR with an extremely dynamic timing-belt drive is used to automate processes such as the transport of valuables. For machine lengths of 12 metres or more, however, the system requires a different type of drive. “A timing-belt drive is suitable for distances of up to 12 metres, but beyond that, the belt tension would become too high,” explains Schefer. With a rack drive, on the other hand, a high level of precision can be achieved over long distances, too. The Valiomat system therefore uses the Linear Unit LRE 8 D14 80×40 when longer distances are involved.

Before MS Protect’s automated safe deposit locker system can be integrated into a bank building, the available space on site needs to be considered. Customer-specific requirements can also be taken into account during implementation, as both ready-to-install and tailor-made linear units can be used. That means the Valiomat system can be integrated into any bank building to automate the transport of valuables, adopting a modular and flexible approach. There are virtually no limits when it comes to the design. The high-bay storage system can consist of a total of up to four rows of blocks. What’s more, even after completion, it is possible to adapt the cassette division to changed requirements. No reconstruction work is required for this purpose, meaning the automated safe deposit locker system can be adapted on an ongoing basis.

A track-guided storage and retrieval vehicle transports a cassette containing the valuables from the high-bay storage system to the output station. It does so with the help of a timing-belt or rack drive from the item Linear System.
